State 4A/3A girls soccer primer: Can anyone dethrone 4A queen Skyline?


3A schedule: Friday – Columbia River (18-0) vs. Liberty (14-3), 2 p.m.; Holy Names (15-5) vs. Mount Spokane (19-0), 4 p.m. Saturday – Third-place match is at 10 a.m.; title match is at 2 p.m.
4A schedule: Friday – Skyline (15-1) vs. Tahoma (20-0), 6 p.m.; Issaquah (18-2) vs. Camas (17-3), 8 p.m.. Saturday – Third-place match is at noon; title match is at 4 p.m.

Tickets: $9 for adults, $7 for children/senior citizens for daily passes; $15 for adults, $10 for children/senior citizens for tournament pass.

Boys Soccer: Video of Jefferson’s SPSL title win; district brackets

Jefferson outlasted Puyallup in the SPSL 4A title match Wednesday night, winning the game in a shootout, 1-0.

Raiders goalkeeper Luis Roman made two saves in the shootout — he also scored on a PK — and you can watch his game-winning save, preserving Jefferson’s 4-3 win in the shootout, and ensuing celebration below.

Here’s a link to my game story, which also includes a write-up on Emerald Ridge’s thrilling 3-2 win over Tahoma in the meeting of the SPSL North and South divisions’ third-place teams. Luke Munizza scored two goals on headers in the final four minutes, including the game winner with 3.2 seconds left.

Soccer: Federal Way’s Rowe picked third overall in MLS Draft

Less than two years ago, Kelyn Rowe was dominating South Puget Sound League opponents on the soccer field.

On Thursday, the 2010 Federal Way High graduate was the third overall selection in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft, taken by the New England Revolution.

“I’d like to say I expected it,” Rowe said in a telephone interview. “It’s all been a blur. The past two years have been good.”

Jason Baumgardt, Rowe’s coach at Federal Way, isn’t surprised to see Rowe go from prep to pro so quickly.

“Not at all,” he said, “Kelyn’s a special player.”

Schedule: Friday – 3A semifinals: Seattle Prep (12-1-7) vs. Southridge (13-4-0), 2 p.m.; Prairie (14-4-1) vs. Bonney Lake (18-1-1), 4 p.m.; 4A semifinals: Skyline (18-0-0) vs. Tahoma (19-1-0), 6 p.m.; Kentwood (15-3-1) vs. Skyview (14-1-3), 8 p.m. Saturday – 3A third-place game, 10 a.m.;4A third-place game, noon; 3A final, 2 p.m.; 4A Final, 4 p.m.
Class 4A outlook: Two-time defending champion Skyline is primed to add a third state title to its trophy case. Goalkeeper Tina Vargas leads a defense that has allowed just four goals and posted 13 shutouts this season. The Spartans, ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American, have reached the semifinals six times in the last 11 seasons. A lot was cleared up on Wednesday night with the SPSL boys soccer playoffs and the SPSL/Seamount sub-district playoffs. The 4A and 3A pairings are complete and all matches will be played on Saturday, while the 2A tournament begins tonight.
