2A Football Semifinal: W.F. West falls to Lynden 17-7

By Meg Wochnick
Staff writer

When the pain of Saturday’s Class 2A state semifinal loss subsides, senior quarterback Mitch Gueller and the rest of the Chehalis Bearcats know they can look back on the 2011 football season and see it as a success.

“It’s not how I wanted it to end,” Gueller said following the Bearcats’ 17-7 loss to top-ranked Lynden at the Tacoma Dome. “I’ll be able to look back on it someday, and think about it being one of the greatest moments of my life.”

The loss ends Chehalis’ season at 10-3, while Lynden (13-0) advances to the Class 2A state championship game and faces Archbishop Murphy at 10 a.m. next Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. It’s Lynden’s fourth trip to the state title game since 2006; the Lions have won three state titles during that span. Not many expected Chehalis to make it this far in the state playoffs given their third-place finish in the 2A Evergreen Conference, nor even keep with the Lions and their multiple offensive weapons, but the Bearcats exceeded both expectations.

Football: Semifinal preview capsules

No. 5 Camas (11-1) vs. No. 3 O’Dea (12-0), 7 p.m.
The Papermakers have reached the semifinals for the first time in school history and run up against an O’Dea squad that is back at the Tacoma Dome for the first time since reaching the Class 3A finals in 2007. Camas’ defense has been lights out, holding nine opponents to six points or less and only one team – Class 4A semifinalist Skyview – has scored more than 14. Combine that with a balanced offense – QB Tony Gennaro has thrown for 2,335 yards, 30 TDs and 7 interceptions, and RB Zach Marshall has rushed for 1,052 yards and 15 TDs – and Camas will be tough to beat. O’Dea slipped past Capital last week, winning 19-16 in triple-overtime. Tatum Taylor can outrun even the fastest of football players – his 97-yard punt return for a touchdown against Capital was proof of that – and is a game-changer.
TNT pick: Camas 31, O’Dea 21

No. 4 Morton/White Pass (10-1) vs. No. 5 Napavine (11-1), 4 p.m.
Lowdown: Morton/White Pass jumped out to a quick lead against Adna last week in the quarterfinals and lets it dominant defense take over, holding on to win 13-12. MWP has posted eight shutouts and only one team has scored more than 13 points against it. Napavine beat MWP 14-7 in Week 3. Napavine returns to the semifinals for the first time since it claimed the Class 2B state title in 2008. The Tigers intercepted four passes in the first half of a 25-22 win over Tacoma Baptist in the quarterfinals. Tucker Stanley powers Napavine’s rushing attack
TNT pick: MWP 22, Napavine 16

No. 2 Woodinville (12-0) vs. Skyline (9-3), 1 p.m.
Lowdown: Woodinville just keeps winning, and the KingCo champion Falcons are doing it with defense. No team has scored more than 17 points against Woodinville and only four have topped 10 points. Woodinville held high-scoring Bethel to just a touchdown two weeks ago and Union mustered nine in a 21-9 loss in the quarterfinals. DE Sawyer Whalen and RB Alec Schwend were KingCo Crown Division defensive and offensive players of the year. Since falling to Eastlake in Week 8, the Spartans have reeled off four straight wins. Skyline dropped out of the Class 4A rankings earlier this season for the first time in school history, but the Spartans are battle-tested and have plenty of experience playing in the dome, having won three state titles in the past four seasons.
TNT pick: Skyline 24, Woodinville 20

Soccer: Brief glance at state semifinals, schedule

The semifinal matchups in all classifications of girls soccer and the boys soccer Class 2B/1B tournament are set.

In the Class 4A tournament, we’ve got a couple intriguing rematches. The Skyline-Tahoma game is a repeat of a 2010 semifinal that Tahoma won 1-0 and a 2009 semifinal that Skyline won 1-0.

The other 4A semifinal pairs Narrows League rivals Gig Harbor and Bellarmine Prep. The Lions won both regular-season games by scores of 2-1 and 4-0. The Tides are streaking after knocking off Edmonds-Woodway 5-1 and SPSL South champion Beamer 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

The 4A and 3A semifinals have changed locations to Sparks Stadium in Puyallup this season. The 2A and 1A matches have moved to Shoreline Stadium in Seattle. Semifinals will be played Friday and finals on Saturday.

Below, you’ll find the matchups, and I’ll fill in game times when they’re announced.
