Basketball: Road to the Tacoma Dome, Class 4A edition

UPDATED: Sunday, Feb. 6

Just as I did during football season, I’ll be breaking down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. Because of the new format this season, some of this might be confusing.

For instance, when I refer to the “opening rounds of the state tournament,” I mean the games that will be played on Feb. 25-26. These games will be played at sites around the state and many people are calling these games “regionals.” Officially, the WIAA maintains that these games are part of the state tournament, so I’ll go with that. Teams will not play in the Tacoma Dome, Yakima SunDome or Spokane Arena until the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which begin on March 3.

Here’s the Class 4A boys state tournament bracket.

Here’s the Class 4A girls state tournament bracket.

That out of the way, here’s how teams will qualify for state:

CLASS 4A BOYS BASKETBALL

NORTHWEST DISTRICT
Teams to state: Two (with possibility for a third)
Lowdown: The top four teams from WesCo’s two divisions – North and South – will qualify for the district tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The top two will receive automatic berths to state, while a third will play a play-in game on Feb. 21 with the No. 3 seed from KingCo for a state berth.

Basketball: Road to the Tacoma Dome – Class 4A edition

Just as I did during football season, I’ll be breaking down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. This is the Class 4A version and I plan to do the same for 3A, 2A and 1A by the end of the week. I will post updates each week until the state tournament fields are complete.

Because of the new district- and state-tournament formats this season, some of this might be confusing. For instance, when I refer to the “ state tournament,” I’m including the games that will be played on Feb. 25-26. These games will be played at multiple sites around the state and many people are calling these games “regionals.” Officially, the WIAA says that these games are part of the state tournament, so I’ll go with that. Teams will not play in the Tacoma Dome, Yakima SunDome or Spokane Arena until the quarterfinals of the state tournament, which begin on March 3.

Five teams have already secured district-tournament berths. Arlington, Monroe and Lake Stevens from the North, and fourth-ranked Jackson and Kamiak from the South.
