Boys Basketball: Recapping Friday’s regional round, looking ahead to state

Well, that didn’t go so well for West Central District teams.

Of the 11 4A and 3A WCD teams that advanced to the regional round, only Bellarmine Prep , Mount Rainier and Kennedy Catholic won on Friday night.

In 4A, Curtis, Olympia, Federal Way and Kentwood lost, as did 3A teams, Lincoln, Foss, Wilson and Decatur.

Here are the 4A, 3A game stories:
Bellarmine Prep 75, Snohomish 54

Union 58, Curtis 47

Mountlake Terrace 77, Decatur 62

4A regional: Curtis falls to Union 58-47

Winning a bi-district boys basketball title is supposed to afford you a luxury matchup in the regional tournament, right?

Not so for the Curtis High Vikings.

Matched up for the second time in the postseason, Union High School of Camas made this one count more, eliminating fifth-ranked Curtis with a 58-47 victory in the Class 4A regionals at Auburn High School.

And Union’s two standouts – forward Tanner Nelson (23 points) and guard Jordan Chatman (21 points), who is headed to Brigham Young – pulled the Titans through to the next round, and to a site they are most comfortable in. Union won the 3A title in the Tacoma Dome in 2010.

It was clear the Titans had two missions Friday night – extend defensive pressure for 80 feet, then collapse down on Curtis big man Darius Johnson-Wilson, the SPSL South player of the year.

3A regionals: O’Dea ends Lincoln’s season 67-48

MILL CREEK – With an evening game and the prospect of Friday afternoon traffic through Seattle, Lincoln High boys basketball coach Aubrey Shelton decided his team would leave Tacoma for its Class 3A regional game against O’Dea at 2 p.m.

The good news? The traffic was light and the team arrived at Jackson High School at 3 p.m. The bad news? That left about two hours for the team to sit around with little to do but watch a movie on its charter bus.

The result? A lethargic effort that saw the Abes fall behind big thanks to carelessness with the ball as fourth-ranked O’Dea ended No. 9 Lincoln’s season 67-48.

“We were asleep,” Shelton said. “It’s the most dead we’ve been in warm-ups all season. I don’t know if it was the bus ride or what but we came out flight, we were tight. It was sad to see.”

Boys Basketball roundup: Mount Rainier, Cascade Christian win; Kentwood, Foss fall

No. 8 Mount Rainier 82, Issaquah 72: Adrian Davis poured in 20 points and Malik Rogers scored 17 at Juanita High, leading the Rams to the state tournament.

Mount Rainier surged to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Caden Rowland added 11 points for the Rams.

Mount Rainier, which was reclassified as a 4A school two years ago, will make its first appearance at the 4A state tournament since 1977. The Rams qualified for the 3A tourney in 2010.

No. 3 Garfield 63, No. 10 Kentwood 59: The Bulldogs ended the Conquerors quest to reach the state tournament for the third year in a row.

CLASS 3A

Basketball: Statewide regional tournament schedule for all classifications

Below are schedules for boys and girls basketball regional tournaments for all classifications. You can see the matchups on the WIAA site here.

Also, the WIAA will webcast the state tournament draws on Sunday. I think it’s great that the public will have the opportunity to view the draw. The procedure and process is always a hot topic in the days leading up to and following the draw. Now

As someone who’s attended a few draws, I think most people that watch will fall into one of two categories. You’ll be fascinated by the process or bored out of your skull. Either way, it should be informative.
