When fall sports begin in August, some schools will be in new classifications, some will be in new leagues and one new conference will have been created.

This change is a result of the WIAA’s two-year reclassification cycle — it should really move to a four-year cycle, but we’ll save that topic for another day — which begins in the fall. The WIAA has put together a list of all the leagues in the state that you can find here.

The biggest change is in Eastern Washington, where the Columbia Basin/Big 9 broke into three leagues: Mid-Columbia Conference 4A, …

One thing worth noting is that Stadium will be the smallest Class 4A school. When I spoke with Tacoma School District athletic director Jennifer Kubista in the fall she said a study showed that the school could be 3A by the next enrollment cycle (2014-16) and that looks possible.

Washington high schools will be reclassified on Jan. 4 and we could see some big changes that dramatically shift the high school sports landscape.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association has released the preliminary numbers it uses for classifying schools. You can view the information here.
