Football: Preseason state rankings for all classifications

What do preseason rankings mean?

Not much, at least when it comes to qualifying for the postseason. Rankings still play no part in that process.

But they’re fun to debate — at least in every classification besides Class 3A, right Bellevue? — and, if enough research is done and luck accumulated, can be an accurate predictor of how the season might unfurl.

Take the TNT’s 2011 preseason rankings. We pegged the eventual state champions in 4A (Skyline), 3A (Bellevue) and 2A (Lynden). We ranked the eventual state champs in 1A (Connell) and 2B (Waitsburg-Prescott) second in their respective classifications and pegged the 1B winner (Neah Bay) fourth.

So, take these preseason rankings for what they’re worth — conversation fodder and the impetus for anonymous emails that will clog my in-box — and we’ll update them after each week in the regular season.

Football: Way too early Class 3A preseason state rankings

Here’s the second installment of our pre-preseason rankings. Click here to view the Class 4A rankings. Class 2A rankings will appear Thursday and Class 1A Friday.

One thing to keep in mind about the rankings is the some schools have been reclassified. For instance, Camas is no longer a Class 3A school. Click here for the 2012-14 enrollment cycle numbers.

That said, here is the way too early Class 3A top five.

CLASS 3A
1. Bellevue (14-0 in 2011)

Who’d you expect? Four state titles in a row and nine since 2001 cement the Wolverines at the top spot. RB Myles Jack, LB Sean Constantine are among the best in the state at their respective positions.

2. O’Dea (13-1)

Irish lost a lot to graduation, nut they’re always strong – O’Dea has reached state every year since 1994. Speedy RB Tatum Taylor is one of the state’s most exciting players.
