Rainier Beach wins 3A title in OT, gives Bethea record sixth state championship

Lakeside High School of Seattle couldn’t take advantage of two opportunities to put away Rainier Beach in regulation.

Given new life, the veteran Vikings took advantage.

Top-ranked Rainier Beach won its second consecutive Class 3A title on Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome, beating Metro League foe Lakeside in overtime, 62-59.

The title is Rainier Beach coach Mike Bethea’s sixth with the school. He breaks a tie with the late Phil Lumpkin, who won five 3A championships at O’Dea.

Rainier Beach boys 73, Franklin 59 in 3A semifinal

Defending Class 3A state boys’ basketball champion Rainier Beach is going for a repeat.

The Vikings advanced to the title by defeating Metro League rival Franklin in the semifinal on Friday night, 73-59.

Rainier Beach (24-4) was 4-0 against Franklin this season, with all four meetings coming in the last 10 games.

Senior guard Will Dorsey led the way for the Vikings, pouring in 21 points while dishing our four assists. Dorsey scored most of his points on layups coming off dribble penetration.

Rainier Beach boys 60, Seattle Prep 52 in 3A quarterfinals

One down, two to go for the defending Class 3A champions.

Top-ranked Rainier Beach overcame a nine-point second quarter deficit to upend Metro League rival Seattle Prep, 60-52, in the 3A quarterfinals Thursday in the Tacoma Dome.

The Vikings overcame the deficit by going on a 22-3 scoring run that lasted deep into the third quarter.

Junior forward Elijah Foster led the way, scoring ten points during the third quarter on the way to a 17-point, 10-rebound performance.
