Class 3A girls: No. 1 Prairie 64, No. 9 Lakeside 50

Even the favored teams can catch a case of the jittersat the state tournament.

Top-ranked Prairie overcame a slow start and some hot shooting in the first half by Lakeside to win its 3A girls’ state quarterfinal contest 64-50 on Thursday at the Tacoma Dome.

The state runner-up Falcons trailed by as much as 22-16 early in the second quarter, but slowly chipped away and finally pulled ahead late in the third quarter. Prairie kept the pressure on by shooting 52 percent in the second half and out-rebounding the Lions by a 2 to 1 margin.

“The girls were just really excited, really jacked up for this game,” Prairie coach Al Aldridge said. “They just weren’t as mentally focused as they needed to be in the first half and it showed.”

3A Bi-District Basketball: Wilson boys, girls fall in finals

The win streak is over, but Wilson High’s season will continue.

Kennedy Catholic toppled the fourth-ranked Rams 65-62 in the finals of the Class 3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District boys basketball tournament Monday at Kent’s ShoWare Center.

“Maybe I jinxed it by saying something to the kids,” said Wilson coach Dave Alwert.

Or maybe Wilson (20-3) ran into an equally hot team in the Lancers, who ran the Tacoma gauntlet of Foss, Lincoln and Wilson in their past three games to the first bi-district title.

Kennedy (20-3) jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first quarter. Star forward Mitch Penner scored at will, easily clearing offensive rebounds and getting put-backs. Penner finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds.
