“We got some young kids we are taking to state that we did not think would get there,” Orting coach Mike Sowards said.

Wrestling Rankings: Is 1A Orting the most dominant wrestling team in the state?

After the Cardinals’ showing at the Central Kitsap Matman tournament on Saturday, I’d say there’s little doubt that Orting is the state’s best team this season. This came a week after the fine folks at WashingtonWrestlingReport.com ranked the Cardinals No. 1 in the state, regardless of classification.

The CK Matman tourney drew some of the state’s best teams — Lake Stevens, Tahoma, Graham-Kapowsin, Rogers of Puyallup, Enumclaw and Kentwood, among others — and Orting finished nearly 50 points in front of the second-place team. The Cardinals sent six wrestlers to the finals and four won – Drew Templeman at 119 pounds, Jesse Akins at 130, Garrett Mann at 135 and Taylor Meeks at 189. Meeks’ title match against Tahoma’s Nick Bayer pitted a pair of two-time state champions and Meeks won 3-1.

Cascade Christian’s 38-28 win over Vashon, plus Orting and Port Townsend victories on Wednesday set up a mini-playoff to extend the season for two teams.

At 7 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School, Orting will play Port Townsend in a 24-minute game. The winner will clinch a postseason berth and the right to face Vashon later that night in a seeding game. A very fortunate coin flip determined that the Pirates would play in the second game.

The winner of the second game will host the No. 3 team from the Northwest District, while the loser will
