Prep Football: Curtis ties SPSL single-season scoring record

Curtis ended the regular season with a 70-24 win over playoff-bound Beamer on Thursday night. By scoring 70 points, the Vikings tied the SPSL’s record for points scored in a season with 416. Auburn set the original mark last year.

Some other postseason-related loose ends were tied up on Thursday, too:

Kentridge and Auburn Riverside both lost, which means Kentridge will play at the winner of tonight’s Gig Harbor-Bellarmine Prep contest and Auburn Riverside will take on Graham-Kapowsin at Art Crate Field in a pig-tail game on Tuesday. Read more »

Prep Football: Big Games of Week 4

Here are capsule previews of the Friday night’s big games in Week 4.

SPSL South
4A No. 10 Graham-Kapowsin (2-0 league, 3-0 overall) at 4A No. 2 Curtis (3-0, 3-0), 7 p.m. Friday

The lowdown: If it’s possible to win a league title in Week 4, this is one game where it could happen. The only remaining undefeated SPSL South squads will square off in what should be a hard-fought, close contest. Offensively, both teams have different strengths. The Eagles have relied on a powerful ground game. RB Matt Dawley is a workhorse, leading the league in rushing attempts (86) and yards (622), while Dalton Dorosky has shown big-play abilities, running for 189 yards on seven carries. Curtis has the ultimate play-maker in Rahmel Dockery. Read more »

Prep Football: Top Games of Week 2

NON-LEAGUE
Evergreen (0-1) vs. 3A No. 5 Lakes (1-0), 7 tonight at Harry E. Lang Stadium
The lowdown:
Despite have just two returning starters on both sides of the ball back from 2009, Lakes didn’t miss a beat in its season-opener last week. The Lancers crushed Clover Park 63-12. QB Cedric Dozier might be on the verge of emerging as a true run-pass threat. Read more »

SPSL dominates 4A state volleyball

There should be no debate on what conference plays the best volleyball in Class 4A. After sending three of its own to the state semifinals, the South Puget Sound League has established itself as the toughest in the state.

Auburn Riverside, Curtis and Graham-Kapowsin will join Mead in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Ravens outside hitter Brooke Bray was the talk of the tournament when she blasted a mind-boggling 53 kills in a first-round victory over second-ranked Richland that included one game that Auburn Riverside won 36-34.

“Brooke set the pace for us,” Ravens coach Chris Leverenz said. “She’s

Prep Football: Big Games of Week 6

SPSL 3A
Peninsula (4-1, 3-1) at Bonney Lake (4-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. today at Sunset Chev Stadium
The lowdown:
The Seahawks and Panthers have each been tripped up once this season – Lakes beat both teams – but outside of their losses to the Lancers, Peninsula and Bonney Lake have been absolutely dominant. The Seahawks haven’t allowed more than a touchdown, while the Panthers’ have won each contest by at least 20 points. Peninsula QB JR Grosshans is tearing up opposing defenses, having thrown for 754 yards and 7 TDs and rushed for 414 yards and 8 TDs. His Panthers’ counterpart, QB Cole Schuler, is equally effective. Schuler leads the SPSL 3A in passing with 806 yards and 8 TDs. Peninsula is riding after throttling rival Gig Harbor, 38-7, in the Fish Bowl. If the Seahawks are overconfident, Bonney Lake will make them pay. Both teams still must face Enumclaw, but the winner of this contest will take the inside track on securing the league’s No. 2 seed, which guarantees a home game in the preliminary round of the state playoffs.
The News Tribune pick: Peninsula has a little more firepower than the Panthers.
Peninsula 26, Bonney Lake 24

Bethel DT Iona will play against G-K

Bethel defensive tackle Happy Iona will return to the field to face Graham-Kapowsin (4-1, 4-1) in a critical SPSL South showdown after missing three games with a high-ankle sprain.

“They took the cast off two weeks ago and he’s ready to go,” Braves coach Gavin Kralik said. “He’s been at practice all week.”

Kralik said that Iona, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior who has given an oral commitment to play at Oregon State, will likely be rotated in and out of the game to keep him fresh. Iona suffered the injury four weeks ago against Curtis.

“We’ll see how many plays
