University girls 49, Glacier Peak 44 in 3A consolation

University stopped No. 7 Glacier Peak’s second-half comeback to pick up a 49-44 Class 3A girls’ basketball consolation-round win in the Tacoma Dome on Friday.

The Titans had the lead in hand late in the fourth quarter when the Grizzlies sliced it to 44-41 with 49.1 seconds left to play.

The Grizzlies rally forced University coach Mark Stinson to call a timeout to refocus his team.

“Coach (Mark) Kuipers is our defensive guru and we were trying to switch up the defense as much as possible,” he said. “(Glacier Peak’s) well coached and they’re a bright team.

Bellevue girls 50, Glacier Peak 39 in 3A quarterfinals

Bellevue High School’s fastbreak offense led the third-ranked Wolverines to a 50-39 3A girls’ quarterfinal victory over Glacier Peak at the Tacoma Dome.

The fast-paced Wolverines were forced to play the Grizzlies grind-out style for three quarters— the result was 8-for-26 from the floor for the Wolverines on 30.8-percent shooting.

“It was a little concerning in the first half…we just kept telling the girls that we got to run our lanes and to run down the court,” Wolverine coach Leah Krautter said.
