No. 5 Curtis jumps out to big lead, holds off No. 2 Jackson down stretch to win 4A title

Clear out a spot in the trophy case – the Curtis High boys basketball team is bringing home a state title.

A sizeable crowd made the trek from University Place to watch their high school outlast previously undefeated Jackson 60-56 in the Class 4A state title game at the Tacoma Dome late Saturday evening.

With a win, Tim Kelly became the first coach to win large-school classification state titles at two different schools.

Kelly won back-to-back state titles at Lincoln in 2001 and 2002. His Vikings finished as runner-ups to state champion Gonzaga in 2011.

Redmon, Mead win 4A girls state basketball title over Arlington

Amidst cheering, hugs, passing of the 4A girls’ championship trophy, and cutting of the nets, Mead High’s Jade Redmon eventually spotted her sister, Jazmine, and her tear-covered face standing along the sideline.

Redmon has always been the little sister — always compared, always in the shadow of her sister Jazmine, a Mead alum and junior guard for the Gonzaga women’s basketball team.

But in Mead’s 58-42 victory against No. 8 Arlington in the Class 4A State Championship Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome, Jade Redmon finally accomplished what Jazmine never did in earning the trophy with the golden ball.
