Wrestling: Top-ranked Orting sends 17 wrestlers to Mat Classic

Different venue, same result as last weekend’s district meet — the Cardinals sent 13 to the finals at their Class 1A Region I tournament Saturday at Bellevue Christian.

And the three-time defending state 1A champions crowned six champions — Fred Green (106 pounds), Austin Dodson (113), Drew Templeman (126), Shannon Maris (138), Mike Moniz (145) and Dalton Evanger (152) — and qualified 17 wrestlers for Mat Classic.

“We got some young kids we are taking to state that we did not think would get there,” Orting coach Mike Sowards said.

Basketball: 3A sub-district results; Lakes boys, girls win

With go-to player – 6-foot-9 center Zach Banner – on the bench with foul trouble for much of the game, a pair of undersized guards lifted Lakes High.

Dequam Walls and Phillip Winston hit clutch shots in key moments of the 3A boys basketball sub-district loser-out contest Saturday afternoon, leading Lakes to a 78-65 win over Enumclaw and keeping the defending state champion’s season alive.

Boys Basketball: Bellarmine Prep beats Olympia 68-51 in Narrows tiebreaker

Dominick Francks shot and shot and shot and shot and shot and shot and shot.

Bellarmine Prep’s boys basketball team had no answer for the Olympia High guard as they watched Francks rain down 3-pointers in the Narrows League 4A tiebreaker Friday at Foss High.

Francks drilled seven first-half treys, including six in a row in a six-minute, second-quarter stretch that turned Bellarmine Prep’s eight-point lead into a six-point deficit.

“What can you say?” Lions coach Bernie Salazar said. “Francks was tremendous.”

Fortunately for the Lions, Francks hot hand cooled in the second half – thanks largely to a ratcheted-up …

Girls Basketball: Updated 2A SPSL/Seamount/Olympic tourney schedule

Two games have changed locations in the 2A SPSL/Seamount/Olympic girls basketball tournament. Sumner-Eatonville will be played at Clover Park High and Kingston-Port Angeles has been moved to Klahowya High.

Boys Basketball: Narrows League tiebreakers

Thre Narrows League boys basketball tiebreaker games have been scheduled for Friday night.

In 4A, Bellarmine Prep and Olympia will play at 7p.m. at Foss High to determine the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds to the bi-district tournament. At the same site, South Kitsap will face Gig Harbor at 5 p.m. in a loser-out contest. The winner advances to the bi-district tourney.

In 3A, Lincoln and Foss will square off at 7 p.m. at Mount Tahoma High to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to the bi-district tournament.

Basketball: Road to the Tacoma Dome, Class 3A edition

Just as I did during football season, I’ll break down how teams can qualify for the basketball state tournaments. Because the current state tournament format has been used only once, here’s a brief primer.

For instance, when I refer to the “regional round of the state tournament,” I mean the games that will be played on Feb. 24-25. These games will be played at sites around the state and you can see the venues for each classification here.
