Schwan dominates, Bellarmine Prep sweeps Gig Harbor in Narrows 4A title match

Whether they were whizzing over the net at warp speed or dropping in with precision placement, Bellarmine Prep junior outside hitter Courtney Schwan’s shots were finding their spots.

And that was bad news for the Gig Harbor Tides.

Schwan racked up 16 kills on a variety of shots and the rest of the Bellarmine roster passed and served at a high level as the Lions swept the Tides, 25-21, 25-17 and 25-20 on Saturday afternoon at the 4A Narrows League tournament at Mount Tahoma High School.

The teams finish with identical records of 12-2 overall and 7-1 in SPSL South play, but Emerald Ridge earned the division’s No. 1 seed to this weekend’s SPSL tournament after defeating the Vikings.

“I thought our serving game and our front line, on our blocks, were great, and our defense stood out more than anything.” Emerald Ridge co-coach Bobby

Timberline downs North Thurston, wins Narrows 3A volleyball title outright

Riley Podowicz wasn’t interested in sharing anything – especially a league championship with her school’s cross-town rival.

The Timberline High senior simply took over the early stages of the fifth and deciding game before getting some help from outside hitters Nicole Pittelkau and Emily Tate as the Blazers captured the Narrows League 3A volleyball title with a thrilling five-set victory over host North Thurston on Tuesday.

The Blazers won 25-18, 18-25, 25-27, 25-17, 15-7.

Podowicz collected six kills and two blocks in the fifth game, while Pittelkau and Tate each added two kills to power the Blazers to the win.
