State game of the week: Battle of Spokane’s Valley schools

East Valley (5-1, 2-1 league) at West Valley (5-1, 3-0 league)
7 p.m. Friday, West Valley High School, Spokane

The Skinny: The preseason thought was when the East Valley-West Valley matchup took place in Week 6, both likely would be unbeaten in Great Northern League and fighting for league supremacy. Pullman, the surprise co-leader with WV, and Cheney, have crashed that party thus far. The Blackhawks topped East Valley last week, 34-28, handing the Knights a surprising loss. Can the defense of co-leader West Valley slow down East Valley’s powerful ground attack?  WV’s defense has allowed 10.1 points

Area games of week: ‘Battle of Valley’ will determine first place in SPSL 2A

The News Tribune picks three South Sound football games every week to preview:

* SPSL SOUTH

Bethel (2-3) at Graham-Kapowsin (4-1)
7 p.m. Friday at Art Crate Field, Spanaway

About the Braves: A perfect 6-0 against Graham-Kapowsin. Can Bethel extend that streak? With RB John Thompson (ankle) banged up last week, the Braves did open it up a bit more with QB Connor Reopelle and fleet-footed RB Colton Allen (18 carries, 155 yards, TD last week).

About the Eagles: At this point, Graham-Kapowsin is focused on

State game of the week: Lakewood not underestimating Meridian

1A Meridian (0-1) at 2A No. 6 Lakewood (1-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Dick Cardinal Stadium, North Lakewood

Skinny: Even though these two schools have not met since Dan Teeter started coaching at Lakewood, he certainly knows Meridian well. The 1991 Lynden Christian graduate played against some of those physical Bob Ames-coached teams. And even after the Trojans were demolished by Burlinton-Edison, 42-8, over the weekend to fall out of the top 10 in Class 1A, Teeter knows the Cougars cannot take them lightly. What really showed up Friday was the Lakewood defense – one that lost
