Power on display, Emerald Ridge rocks Tahoma to claim SPSL 4A fastpitch title

Emerald Ridge sophomore Tenli Petty smashed two home runs to power Emerald Ridge to a 7-0 victory over Tahoma in the SPSL 4A fastpitch championship game Friday at the Service Club Ballfields in Kent.

With the win, Emerald Ridge claimed its first SPSL 4A title.

The Jaguars will be the No. 1 seed at next week’s West Central District III tournament, while Tahoma will be the No. 2 seed.

Emerald Ridge beat Kentridge, and Tahoma defeated Todd Beamer earlier in the day to set up the title game.

When Petty stepped up to the plate in the first inning, she

Prado-Huerta has last laugh in late flurry of scoring in Jefferson’s 4-3 SPSL title win

In a battle of inner-district high schools battling for the South Puget Sound League boys’ soccer championship, Jefferson High School came away with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Federal Way at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Raiders earned the league’s top seed to this weekend’s Class 4A West Central District championships.

After the rough and tumble beginning from both sides, the scoring kicked off with Federal Way (15-2) striking first in the 29th minute, as senior forward Odasson Pelogi broke through the Raiders’ back line to put a composed, far post shot away.

Bringing it back even, Jefferson (13-0-4)

Illies strikes out 10, No. 1 Puyallup edges 4A champion Kentwood, 2-1, for SPSL crown

Puyallup High sophomore ace Brendan Illies is making it look easy.

And for a Vikings’ team getting locked in for a run back to the Class 4A state championship game, that’s good news.

Behind a lively fastball and nasty breaking stuff, Illies piled up 10 strikeouts en route to a complete game performance, fueling top-ranked Puyallup to a 2-1 win over Kentwood in the South Puget Sound League championship game on Thursday night at Kent Memorial Field.

“I saw a good fastball, and his breaking ball was really good,” Puyallup coach Marc Wiese said of his ace. “If we can

Two games, 54 runs . . . and a lot of smoking bats for Kentlake fastpitch

Kentlake High School has had mashers send long home runs over the home fences for years.

But nothing – NOTHING – has happened quite like the scoring output the Falcons have experienced in their past two games.

A couple of days after defeating defending SPSL North champion Jefferson (27-20), Kentlake beat Kent-Meridian, 27-1, on Wednesday.

If you are trying to add that on your fingers and toes, forget about it. Grab a calculator. The Falcons have totaled 54 runs in their past 11 innings of at-bats – and scored at least one run in each of those innings.

“We kind

Swing away! Kentlake upends Jefferson, 27-20, in SPSL North fastpitch scorefest

Jefferson High fastpitch coach Chad Fahnlander had a lot of explaining to do.

And to all his coaching friends, even a few of the newspapers, when it came to the subject of his SPSL North game Monday, he started the same way:

This isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.

The softball was flying far and true Monday in Auburn as visiting Kentlake won a slugfest – 27-20 – over the defending divisional champions.

In seven innings, 47 total runs were scored. Forty-two hits were recorded. Four of them were home runs, two by both sides.

“I was part of game
