Hot start has Bonney Lake playing for first 3A state boys’ soccer championship

Once the hot start cooled off, the Bonney Lake Panthers started to show signs of weakness.

But despite a long lull, all it took was a timely second-half goal to snap them out of their funk.

Brody Fitzsimmons scored a key goal in the 41st minute, helping Bonney Lake (18-4) take command in a 3-1 win over Hanford on Friday afternoon in a Class 3A state semifinal game at Sparks Stadium.

The Panthers will take on Shorecrest (16-3), a 3-2 winner over Bainbridge, in Saturday’s championship game at 2 p.m.

The Panthers opened the second half in spectacular fashion, as

Punched soccer referee remains in coma; player investigated in Utah

Large or small, sportsmanship is always under the microscope.

A simple complaint wasn’t enough in Utah last week during a high school boys’ soccer match. Tempers flared after a yellow card was issued. A player came up and punched the match’s lead referee as he was writing down notes.

The rest of it is sad: That referee started vomiting blood, collapsed and has been in a coma ever since.

The teenager was arrested on Monday, but has not been charged with a crime. The incident is still under investigation.

* In another display of unworldly scoring, Kentlake defeated Kent-Meridian, 27-1, in an SPSL North fastpitch game in Kent.

On Monday afternoon, the Falcons beat defending divisional champion Jefferson, 27-20, in Auburn.

They have scored 54 runs in their past 12 innings (and scored at least one run in each frame). In the two games, they have pounded out 11 extra-base hits. Regan Rudisill hit a home run in the win Wednesday.

* Ace pitcher Meagan Hendrix tossed a no-hitter, striking out 16, and Emerald Ridge scored all of its runs in the fourth inning as the Jaguars blanked intra-district

Fioretti hired to lead Auburn Mountainview boys soccer program

Jimmy Fioretti, an Auburn High graduate with extensive club soccer coaching experience, has been hired at Auburn Mountainview to lead the Lions’ boys program, athletic director Chris Carr announced Friday.

Fioretti replaces Cary Davidson, who stepped down at the end of last season.

“He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position, and we are fortunate to have hired Jimmy in the classroom as well,” Carr said.

The ex-University of San Diego and University of Puget Sound player was a Loggers’ assistant under Reece Olney (2008-12), an assistant at Auburn High last season and has also coached at

Early second-half goal is all Sumner needs to make first semifinal trip

Frightful things can happen in the corner of soccer fields – a place where the action can get down and dirty.

Early in the second half, Sumner High forward Kaylie Rozell – known as much for her competitive fire and she is for scoring goals – trapped the ball in the left corner near the Archbishop Murphy goal.

She stopped the ball. She waited. She might have even said something to the Wildcats’ defender who frantically tried to take the ball away from her.

Most importantly, Rozell got the thing she wanted most – a corner kick for her team.

Wilson shuts out Timberline, wins first league girls soccer title in 30 years

Few on the Wilson High girls soccer sideline can recall anything about 1982, but all of them know it was a long time ago.

Too long, in fact.

The Rams scored three goals in the first 26 minutes, and overwhelmed Timberline, 3-0, in a winner-take-all match to win the Narrows 3A League championship at Stadium Bowl on Tuesday night.

It was Wilson’s first league crown in girls soccer in 30 years.

“That was the year I was born,” Rams coach Angie Karabaich said with a chuckle.

The teams tied 1-1 earlier in the season in Lacey, setting up the league
