Riding late-season surge, South Kitsap wins 4A Narrows baseball tournament title

Tyler Ludlow’s two-run double in the first inning was all the runs red-hot South Kitsap needed in claiming the 4A Narrows League baseball tournament title over Olympia in Lacey on Friday night.

The Wolves, who placed third in the regular season, won 10 of their past 11 games, including a 10-0 win over the Bears. They will be league’s No. 1 seed at the 4A West Central/Southwest bi-district tournament Tuesday.

As the second seed, Olympia (16-5) faces Puyallup, champions of the South Puget Sound League, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kent’s Art Wright Field. The Vikings beat Olympia, 7-0, on

Chamberlin’s RBI single in the 7th wins it for South Kitsap – 8-7 over Olympia

PORT ORCHARD – Every fastpitch ace pitcher thinks the mound belongs to her.

So imagine how South Kitsap High School’s Ashley Chamberlin felt when she was lifted in the seventh inning of her final home game?

She was steaming – especially after Olympia scored the game-tying run with her sitting in the dugout.

But she took out her frustration another way – with a bat in her hands.

Chamberlin, a senior, knocked in the game-winning run with a single to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Wolves to an 8-7 victory over Olympia in the

Stadium runs out to big lead, holds off Gig Harbor, 3-2, in Narrows 4A boys soccer

Standing in disbelief, trying to hide the pure panic that had settled in on the Stadium High School boys’ soccer sideline, first-year coach Adam Becker could only watch.

The Tigers played beautiful soccer in the first half to run out to a big lead.

And in the second half, it all changed.

But in the end, a few keep-away ploys helped the Tigers hold off Gig Harbor, 3-2, in a Narrows League 4A showdown at Stadium Bowl on Tuesday night.

Max Harvey tallied a pair of first-half goals for Stadium, which built a 3-0 lead. But the Tides thoroughly dominated

Loague tosses no-hitter in pitching duel, leading Olympia past Bellarmine Prep, 2-0

In the biggest baseball game of the season, Olympia High’s Elliott Loague was ready – despite the bad weather.

Loague and the Bears celebrated the school’s first seven-inning no-hitter since 2008, blanking Bellarmine Prep, 2-0, at Fuchs Field on Friday afternoon.

The win broke a tie atop the Narrows 4A standings, giving the Bears (13-4, 8-1) the inside track over Bellarmine Prep (11-4, 7-2) for their sixth consecutive league crown by sweeping the season series.

Loague (seven strikeouts, 84 pitches in seven innings) emerged the winner in a pitchers’ duel with Lions’ ace Harry Stenberg (three-hitter in seven innings, seven

Tenth-ranked Bellarmine Prep scores 10 points in a row late, posts 53-37 victory over Kentwood

It wasn’t even a week ago that Kentwood High’s Jackson Huerta sank a halfcourt overtime buzzer-beater to lift the Conquerors to a one-point victory and advance them to the Class 4A West Central District boys’ basketball tournament.

Bellarmine Prep didn’t offer him the chance for another.

Kentwood hung with the Lions for three-plus quarters before the 10th-ranked Lions tightened their defense, recording 10 unanswered points to secure a 55-40 home victory.

The Lions (14-7) will take on sixth-ranked Federal Way in the WCD quarterfinals on Friday night.

Bellarmine Prep held Kentwood scoreless for more than four minutes with time

Foss has others besides Trent – and shows it in beating Decatur, 65-53

With opposing coaches generating as many defensive schemes as they can think of in an effort slow down Foss High star Dezymn Trent, it often leaves ample opportunities for other Falcons to have a big night.

Such was the case Wednesday night in the Falcons’ Class 3A West Central District opening boys’ basketball game against Decatur.

Guard Jericho Ballard scored a game-high 23 points and Olashawn Miller added 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks as Foss led wire-to-wire in a 65-53 win at Franklin Pierce High School.

The Falcons advance to play Columbia River at 7:45 p.m. Friday at

Hot-shooting Bakalarski gives South Kitsap lift in Wolves’ 66-57 win over Auburn

South Kitsap and Auburn played fast, aggressive, attacking basketball from the opening tip of their Class 4A West Central District boys game Wednesday.

However, an early abundance of turnovers and missed shots depressed the score and kept either team from getting much separation in the first half.

That changed instantly in the second half, as the Wolves bolted away with a nine-point run and surged to a 66-57 win over the Trojans at Auburn High School.

South Kitsap moves on to face Bethel in a 4A district quarterfinal game Friday.

“A team like us, we play four guards, so we

Stadium’s senior backcourt leads school to first boys’ basketball playoff win since 2001

By the way they were shooting the basketball, it was obvious from the get-go the Stadium High Tigers were not afraid.

In fact, they embraced the moment – their first appearance in the Class 4A West Central District boys’ playoffs since 2007. And by their runner-up finish in the Narrows 4A, they got to host comeback-minded Jefferson of the SPSL North.

Riding a hot scoring wave in the second half, the Tigers ran away for a 67-40 victory in Tacoma on Wednesday night – their first playoff win since 2001.
