Sumner defeats Sehome, 1-0, completes perfect season for 2A girls soccer crown

Sumner High’s theme this season: Unfinished business.

But now the score has been settled, and the warm-up sweatshirts with that theme etched on the back no longer serve a purpose. No more business is left to finish.

These Spartans are the Class 2A State Champions — the first team to do so in school history.

“The business is completely finished,” said Sumner goalkeeper Jamie Lange after the top-ranked Spartans shut out Sehome 1-0 Saturday at Shoreline Stadium. “It’s done and it feels unbelievably great.”

The only score of the match came with five minutes left in the first half

Hooks-to-Clarin combo nets Tahoma its third consecutive trip to 4A semifinals

Brie Hooks and Taylor Clarin connected twice on set pieces Saturday night, propelling the No. 7 nationally ranked Tahoma Bears to a 2-1 victory over the Curtis Vikings in the Class 4A state girls’ soccer quarterfinals.

With the win, Tahoma (20-0-0) advances to play defending champion Skyline in the state semifinals next weekend at Puyallup High School – its third consecutive trip to the final four, but never having won the 4A crown.

“It’s not weighting as much as it’s we expect to be there again because we have unfinished business,” Tahoma coach Jason Johnson said. “That’s what drives the

Deweirdt’s tally in 74th minute puts Skyline in 4A semifinals for fifth year in a row

Defending Class 4A girls’ soccer champion Skyline kept knocking on the door, and finally broke through in the 74th minute when forward Amanda Johnston’s cross went past a pack of players in the Puyallup penalty box, and right to forward Anna Deweirdt.

All Deweirdt did was stop the rolling ball and fire a shot that went into the upper left portion of the net for the game-winner in the Spartans’ 1-0 quarterfinal victory over Puyallup at Sparks Stadium.

Puyallup (15-3), the SPSL South champion, never got anything going – getting one shot off the entire match. It was by Justine

Early second-half goal is all Sumner needs to make first semifinal trip

Frightful things can happen in the corner of soccer fields – a place where the action can get down and dirty.

Early in the second half, Sumner High forward Kaylie Rozell – known as much for her competitive fire and she is for scoring goals – trapped the ball in the left corner near the Archbishop Murphy goal.

She stopped the ball. She waited. She might have even said something to the Wildcats’ defender who frantically tried to take the ball away from her.

Most importantly, Rozell got the thing she wanted most – a corner kick for her team.

Make no mistake, the Liberty High Patriots – the three-time reigning KingCo 3A girls soccer champions and defending Class 3A runners-up – put on a clinic in eliminating Bonney Lake, 3-1, at Sunset Chev Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Kiana Hafferty scored twice in the 21st and 62nd minutes, and Liberty (15-3) outshot Bonney Lake, 20-6.

“If we play the best we can, this is what happens usually,” Hafferty said.
