Hayes’ single helps Emerald Ridge rally for 4-3 win over Beamer in SPSL South fastpitch

Chelsey Hayes’ walk-off hit kept Emerald Ridge in first place in the SPSL South as the Jaguars came from behind to edge Beamer, 4-3, in Puyallup.

In the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners at second and third, Hayes laced the first high fastball she saw from Titans starter Madison Rogers, and it fell in between two Beamer defenders in left field for an RBI single.

Kayla Muche scored the game-winning run on an error.

Portland State commit Meagan Hendrix struck out 15, and walked one in a complete-game win for the Jaguars.

Two games, 54 runs . . . and a lot of smoking bats for Kentlake fastpitch

Kentlake High School has had mashers send long home runs over the home fences for years.

But nothing – NOTHING – has happened quite like the scoring output the Falcons have experienced in their past two games.

A couple of days after defeating defending SPSL North champion Jefferson (27-20), Kentlake beat Kent-Meridian, 27-1, on Wednesday.

If you are trying to add that on your fingers and toes, forget about it. Grab a calculator. The Falcons have totaled 54 runs in their past 11 innings of at-bats – and scored at least one run in each of those innings.

* In another display of unworldly scoring, Kentlake defeated Kent-Meridian, 27-1, in an SPSL North fastpitch game in Kent.

* Ace pitcher Meagan Hendrix tossed a no-hitter, striking out 16, and Emerald Ridge scored all of its runs in the fourth inning as the Jaguars blanked intra-district

Swing away! Kentlake upends Jefferson, 27-20, in SPSL North fastpitch scorefest

Jefferson High fastpitch coach Chad Fahnlander had a lot of explaining to do.

And to all his coaching friends, even a few of the newspapers, when it came to the subject of his SPSL North game Monday, he started the same way:

This isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.

The softball was flying far and true Monday in Auburn as visiting Kentlake won a slugfest – 27-20 – over the defending divisional champions.

In seven innings, 47 total runs were scored. Forty-two hits were recorded. Four of them were home runs, two by both sides.

“I was part of game

Fastpitch primer: Balanced Jefferson, Rogers have lengthy track records in 4A

Team to watch
The bigger the stakes, the better Rogers High School plays. Despite not winning the SPSL South the past five seasons, the Rams have made it to the Class 4A West Central District title game four consecutive times – winning three titles. And this squad, led by pitcher Tess Dixon and catcher Rylee Whispel, can beat teams with speed and reliable hitting.

League favorites
SPSL North –
Jefferson. SPSL South – Rogers. Narrows 4A – Bellarmine Prep. SPSL 3A – Peninsula. Narrows 3A – Wilson. SPSL 2A – White River. Evergreen Conference – W.F. West. Nisqually

4A Fastpitch: Jefferson is lone South Sound team in semifinals

SPOKANE – The best fastpitch softball teams usually rely heavily on dominant pitching, but the Jefferson Raiders are doing their best to change that way of thinking.

“Our thing is all about outscoring teams,” Jefferson coach Chad Fahnlander said after the Raiders opened the State 4A tournament with a pair of high-scoring wins Friday at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.

The Raiders (26-4), the only area team that remained undefeated after the first day of the two-day, double-elimination tourney, beat Central Valley of Spokane Valley 7-4 and Monroe 10-8.
