Did bad sportsmanship or mass disorientation reign in Class 2A state boys soccer finals?

Hurt feelings are bound to linger for a while in light of what transpired in the Class 2A state boys’ soccer finals Saturday in Sumner.

Cheney High School, a hard-luck runner-up four times over the past five 2A tournaments, finally brought home the championship hardware with a 2-1 overtime victory over Tyee High School at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Ian Scimandle maneuvered through the Tyee defense in overtime to score the game-winning goal. It was the Blackhawks’ first state title in soccer.

Own goal gives Bonney Lake first 3A state boys soccer title, 1-0 over Shorecrest

Was it an odd way to win a state title? Sure.

Did anyone within the Bonney Lake High boys soccer program seem to care?

Not one bit.

The Panthers scored a goal in the 78th minute when Shorecrest freshman Kevin Musar headed a free kick from 50 yards out into his own goal, allowing Bonney Lake to steal a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the Class 3A state championship game at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

“Both teams are knocking … it happens,” Bonney Lake coach Luke Helling-Christy said. “Wow. Yeah, we’ll take it. At that stage of the game, we’ll

No doubt Jefferson best boys soccer team in 4A – and proves it by winning state title

Jefferson High School left no doubt about who was the best boys soccer team in Class 4A — and arguably among all classifications — this season.

A thorough 3-0 dismantling of Union of Vancouver in the Class 4A state title game Saturday night at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup hammered the point home with authority.

Just as the program did in 1983 in going undefeated en route to winning the school’s first 4A title, the Raiders closed out an undefeated season and added another state title — the eighth — to the collection 30 years later.

“I won a lot of

Yes, these Raiders are a force to be reckoned with.

Thomas Jefferson took one step closer to earning its eighth Class 4A title in school history with a dominant 3-0 win over Snohomish on Friday night in the state semifinals at Sparks Stadium.

Long goal lifts Sedro-Woolley to 1-0 victory over Sumner in Class 2A state quarterfinals

Kyle Witzel is the designated 60-yard shooter for the Sedro-Woolley High School boys’ soccer team.

That might seem like a desperation ploy on the surface – a do-or-die prayer shot at the end of varsity matches. But the Cubs not only have it in their game plan – they actually practice it.

And six seconds into the second half, Witzel hammered a long shot over the head of goalkeeper Henry Leenstra for the match’s lone goal, and Sedro-Woolley shocked Sumner, 1-0, in a Class 2A state quarterfinal at Sunset Chev Stadium on Saturday.

Sedro-Woolley moves on to the 2A semifinals

Lirio’s long-range blast goes as game-winner in Sumner’s 2-1 win in 2A boys’ soccer opener

From staff writer Kevin Manning

Playing aggressively can be both beneficial and detrimental in soccer.

The Sumner High Spartans experienced both ends of that Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class 2A state boys’ soccer playoffs.

Andres Lirio scored twice, lifting the SPSL 2A champions to a 2-1 victory over Olympic at Sunset Chev Stadium, marking the Spartans’ first state-tournament win since 1995.

Sumner will host Sedro-Wolley on Saturday as part of a state quarterfinal doubleheader with Bonney Lake (3A), which plays Shorewood.

Sumner’s aggressive style wore down Olympic in the second half, opening up scoring opportunities.
