Movin’ on up, could McGuire end up being the next ‘Johnny Bench?’

Seems as if Kentwood High catcher Reese McGuire is quickly moving up some of the 2013 amateur draft boards in the final weeks.

* ESPN’s Keith Law (scouting guru) has moved McGuire up to 10th (to TOR) in his latest MLB mock draft. First catcher selected.

* Chris Crawford, of Prospect Insider, has also moved McGuire up a few spots – to 15th (to ARI). Crawford also has him as the first catcher taken (McGuire spent first half of season No. 2 behind South Carolina prepster Nick Ciuffo).

Why the movement? McGuire’s defense is superior to anybody in the class – big, athletic target who blocks pitches cleanly, and his “pop” throw from home plate to second base has been clocked in the 1.7-second range.

Asked Puyallup coach Marc Wiese, who has been around a few major-leaguers, what makes McGuire so good. Wiese simply said we are all watching “an All-Star catcher” in the making.

“Defense is off the charts,” Wiese said. “On the scouts’ scale, he is Johnny Bench.”
