It is unfortunate it had to come to this – so soon in the Class 3A state boys’ soccer playoffs.
But it did as two highly-regarded league champions faced off in the opening round.
Dalton Ogdon scored the lone goal in the 75th minute, lifting undefeated Bonney Lake to a 1-0 victory over Metro League champion Lakeside of Seattle at Interbay Stadium on Tuesday night.
It was a rematch of a first-round matchup in 2011 – the Panthers’ only state appearance until Tuesday – and Lakeside won, 3-2, in a shootout on this same field.
Bonney Lake, the SPSL 3A champion, moves on to face the winner of the Shorewood-Wilson opener Wednesday night in Tacoma.
For much of the match Tuesday, Bonney Lake and Lakeside appeared like two teams feeling each other out, waiting for a chance to pounce.
And that moment came late for the Panthers when senior Suwilanji Silozi fought threw two Lakeside defenders to take a quick shot that was narrowly deflected by Lions goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley.
The deflection came to Brody Fitzsimmons just outside the penalty box, but eventually Ogdon would convert the game-winning shot, which landed in the bottom right corner of the net.
In the first half, Bonney Lake had trouble gaining control of the ball against Lakeside, which upset defending 3A champion Bainbridge for the Metro title.
It led to a couple of quick transition opportunities for the Lions. But Moxie Oseland was solid in goal. He finished with seven saves.
