Coming into the season, Fife baseball set some lofty goals.
The Trojans met one of them Saturday.
The SPSL 2A champions scored in the final inning to pull out a 3-2 victory over Sumner to win their first West Central District title since 2008.
Brock Carpenter scored the game winning run on back-to-back Sumner errors at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.
“You could feel it in the dugout and on the field today,” Fife coach Shane Nixon said about the atmosphere surrounding the Trojans. “We just knew we were going to win. (Winning today) was the goal we set as a team from the beginning of the season.”
With the game tied 2-2, Carpenter hit a sharp ground ball to second, but an overthrow allowed him to reach second on the play. On the very next at-bat, Josh Connolly hit a ground ball to first but was called safe when the first baseman floated an underhand throw over Spartans pitcher Christian Parsons’ head.
That error allowed Carpenter to score from second.
Sumner’s Chase Torgison hit a two-run double to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth.
Fife will be the No. 1 seed heading into state next week and Sumner will be the No. 2 seed.
