Did bad sportsmanship or mass disorientation reign in Class 2A state boys soccer finals?

Hurt feelings are bound to linger for a while in light of what transpired in the Class 2A state boys’ soccer finals Saturday in Sumner.

Cheney High School, a hard-luck runner-up four times over the past five 2A tournaments, finally brought home the championship hardware with a 2-1 overtime victory over Tyee High School at Sunset Chev Stadium.

Ian Scimandle maneuvered through the Tyee defense in overtime to score the game-winning goal. It was the Blackhawks’ first state title in soccer.

Own goal gives Bonney Lake first 3A state boys soccer title, 1-0 over Shorecrest

Was it an odd way to win a state title? Sure.

Did anyone within the Bonney Lake High boys soccer program seem to care?

Not one bit.

The Panthers scored a goal in the 78th minute when Shorecrest freshman Kevin Musar headed a free kick from 50 yards out into his own goal, allowing Bonney Lake to steal a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the Class 3A state championship game at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

“Both teams are knocking … it happens,” Bonney Lake coach Luke Helling-Christy said. “Wow. Yeah, we’ll take it. At that stage of the game, we’ll

Coach’s hunch pays off, Guinn pitches Auburn Mountainview to 3A baseball title

Glen Walker had a hunch. He first wanted to run it by his baseball coaching staff at Auburn Mountainview High School, which merited a round of discussion.

For the most important game of the season – the Class 3A state title game against West Seattle – Walker wanted to give the baseball to Shawn Guinn, a left-hander who had an up-and-down season.

Rewarding his coach’s faith, Guinn pitched a one-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Lions brought home their first 3A title with a 7-1 victory over West Seattle at Gesa Stadium in Pasco on Saturday afternoon.

Leading 2-0,

No doubt Jefferson best boys soccer team in 4A – and proves it by winning state title

Jefferson High School left no doubt about who was the best boys soccer team in Class 4A — and arguably among all classifications — this season.

A thorough 3-0 dismantling of Union of Vancouver in the Class 4A state title game Saturday night at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup hammered the point home with authority.

Just as the program did in 1983 in going undefeated en route to winning the school’s first 4A title, the Raiders closed out an undefeated season and added another state title — the eighth — to the collection 30 years later.

“I won a lot of

Getting early scare from teammates, Grenleys repeat as 1A boys’ double champion

Rob Grenley, you’ve been one-upped.

In two years at Charles Wright Academy, twins Teddy and Phillip Grenley own two state doubles titles as they capped the Class 1A tennis championships with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Overlake’s Mac Hewitt and Pranav Harikrishnan on Saturday at the Yakima Tennis Center.

So what entered Phillip’s mind as he absorbed what he and his brother Teddy had just accomplished as just sophomores?

“It was good to one-up my dad by doing this twice,” he said, whose father, Rob Grenley, won a singles title with Charles Wright Academy his senior year before going to

Chambers goes 46.36 in final 400 race for Foss High School at Star Track

Donning a dark Foss High School warm-up suit and a huge wintery knitted beanie, senior Marcus Chambers made his way to the infield at Mount Tahoma Stadium a couple hours before his 400-meter race.

Mostly, he bounced around, loosening up with a look of supreme confidence. Something great was about to happen at Star Track XXXI. He knew it. He felt it.

To end his prep career, Chambers got going in a hurry right after the gun. With 125 meters to go, nobody in the Class 3A finals’ field was around him. He would have to carry this one home

Wright’s blast for Meadowdale stuns SPSL 3A champion Enumclaw in state fastpitch quarterfinals

LACEY – Rebecca Wright’s biggest fear was being the final out.

The Meadowdale sophomore catcher was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts before she stepped to the plate with two runners on, and two out in the bottom of the 10th inning, with her Mavericks trailing by one to Enumclaw in Friday’s Class 3A state quarterfinal fastpitch game.

Her confidence was shaken, but did her best to flush out her prior at-bats and focus on the scenario at stake.

“I wanted to get a base hit,” Wright said, “and keep (the rally) going.”

How about a walk-off three-run home run to win
