Tucker Haymond and the No. 1 Bulldogs did not want to leave Tacoma with another round of disappointment – and they didn’t in clinching third place after an 80-68 victory over Arlington for third place in the Class 4A state boys’ basketball championships at the Tacoma Dome on Saturday afternoon.

A night after dropping a heartbreaking semifinal decision to Curtis, it was Haymond who set the tone Saturday, scoring 24 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field.

“It was real tough,” he said of Friday’s semifinal loss. “I leave everything out on the court – I put my heart on the court. I wasn’t even over it until I stepped on the court today.”

Eighth-ranked Arlington jumped out to an 18-13 lead. Slowly, Haymond and Garfield took over the game. Trevaunte Williams was also a force for the Bulldogs with 21 points.

“They love the game, they love each other – they want to play for each other,” said Garfield coach Ed Haskins, a former Clover Park High and Pierce College player. “(Today) I asked them to play for me, and I’ve never done that before but they did.”

The Bulldogs were able to match the school’s highest finish in the Haskins’ tenure. Garfield finished third in 2011.

Meanwhile, Arlington standout Terry Dawn only needed 19 points to break the school’s all-time scoring record Saturday. He got the record by scoring 21 – earning the new mark late in the third quarter.

“It brought tears to my eyes. Even it being on the last game of my (high school) career, it couldn’t have happened any better,” Dawn said.

Arlington took home its first state trophy.
