Mountlake Terrace guard Marquis Armstead was expecting the weak side help defender to come shut down his path to the basket.

That help never came, and Armstead made the University Titans pay.

Armstead converted on 3-point play with five seconds to go, powering the fifth-ranked Hawks to a 59-56 victory in a Class 3A boys state consolation game on Friday afternoon at the Tacoma Dome.

“I knew I wanted the ball, and once I got it I wasn’t going to do anything to mess it up,” said Armstead, who finished with 12 points.

University had a chance to tie, but Brett Bailey’s long 3-pointer just beyond the halfcourt line clanked off the rim. Bailey, who will play at the University of San Diego next year, finished with a game-high 28 points on 12 of 20 shooting from the field.

Armstead and Bailey each scored their team’s final seven points during an exciting final two minutes.

Mountlake Terrace led 29-26 at the half, and the two teams scored identical points in both the third and fourth quarters.

Loren Lacasse scored 18 points to lead Mountlake Terrace, which plays Seattle Prep in the fourth/sixth place game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
