Otiona Gildon’s career day propeled No. 4 ranked Gonzaga Prep to a 59-44 Class 4A girls’ basketball consolation-round win over Kentwood in the Tacoma Dome on Friday.
After the Bullpups lost to Arlington on Thursday, coach Mike Arte decided to change the game plan – it was simple really, get the ball to sophomore standout Gildon.
Gildon (12-of-22 field goals) ended the game with a career-high 30 points to go with her game-high 12 rebounds in the Bullpups’ rout.
“At halftime they told me I had 20 points and I was like really,” Gildon said describing her performance. “We wanted to make sure we played our game…after halftime (coach Arte) said to get it inside because they couldn’t stop me.”
The Conquerors were able to hold the Bullpups scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter that brought the Conks’ within a few scores – Laura Stockton started a fast-break off a steal and nailed a pass down court to Gildon that ended the Bullpups’ drought.
The Bullpups – who placed fifth last year – will be seeking the school’s highest state placing when they face the winner of the Inglemoor/Skyline game Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.
