Boys track primer: Can Chambers chase down Robinson’s longstanding 400 record?

Boys team favorite
Loaded for bear, this is Federal Way High School’s time to try and win its first Class 4A state track and field title. The Eagles took 10 underclassman participants to last year’s Star Track, and eight of them were state placers. Their speed with Ezekial McNeal, Michael Tate, Kerson Lubin, Jeremiah McNeal, Tremaine Rambo and Aaron Persinger will be tough to topple.

Athlete to watch
Defending Class 3A 400-meter champion Marcus Chambers, of Foss High School, boasts the top returning time (46.18 seconds) in the nation. He earned that mark in winning the USATF National

Girls track primer: Curtis has the speed, Bellarmine Prep and Gig Harbor have balance as 4A contenders

Girls team favorite
Since 2003, the Class 4A team title has been like a relay handoff among Curtis (won in 2003-04 and 2012), Bellarmine Prep (2005-06, 2009) and Gig Harbor (2007). All three schools return lots of state-placing firepower, and we give the Vikings the edge based on speedsters Kennadi Bouyer, Kenya Shakoor, Kira Perkins, Adreonia Bradley and their collective four state titles from last season.

Athlete to watch
Gig Harbor’s Courtney Jost is a jumping fiend. The reigning Class 4A triple jump champion (39 feet, 41/2 inches) has greatly improved her speed to be a threat in

Auburn Riverside High School hired Federal Way assistant Bryant Thomas as its new head football coach, the school announced Tuesday. Thomas replaces Bob Morgan, who resigned in January after six seasons coaching the Ravens.

Boys soccer primer: Can Jefferson finally break through for eighth 4A title?

No school has won more Class 4A state boys soccer titles than Jefferson (seven) – and the Raiders are loaded for a run at No. 8. Their entire front line returns, but they also get back premier goal-scorer Isidro Prado-Huerta and goalkeeper McKay Owsley. With their firepower, the reigning SPSL champions will likely see opponents play them with 8-9 players behind the ball.

League favorites
SPSL North – Jefferson. SPSL South – Federal Way. Narrows 4A – Stadium. SPSL 3A – Bonney Lake. Narrows 3A – North Thurston. SPSL 2A – Fife. Evergreen Conference –

4A boys rally for 108-107 win over 3A at WIBCA all-state game

An all-star showcase suddenly turned into a real basketball game.

That normally isn’t how it goes when the Class 4A and Class 3A boys hook up at the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association all-state game.

But as soon as the 4A squad started making shots late, suddenly a more serious expression came over the face of coach Tim Kelly, who just led Curtis High School to the WIAA state title two weeks ago.

“I said, ‘Can you play just a little bit of defense now?’” Kelly said with a chuckle.

And after trailing by as many as 17 points in
