There were some butterflies — as expected considering the circumstances — but
the Wilson Rams leaned on their defense to pull them through uncharted waters.

Making their first appearance in the Tacoma Dome in school history, the No. 4 Rams
overcame a poor shooting performance from the field and free throw line by forcing
17 turnovers and holding Mercer Island to single digit scoring in two quarters,
eventually holding on for a 48-37 victory in the Class 3A state quarterfinals on
Thursday morning at the Tacoma Dome.

“I thought we were able to improvise, adapt and overcome some situations (where
we) were trying to control things that we couldn’t control,” Wilson coach Michelle
Birge said.

Wilson (22-2) moves on to the semifinals, where it will meet Seattle Prep (21-7), a
46-39 winner over Kamikian, on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Tia Briggs and Bethany Montgomery each had 11 points for the Rams. Sophomore
Violet Morrow added nine points and nine rebounds. Kris Brackmann scored 12
points to lead Mercer Island (21-8).

Wilson led 23-17 at the half, holding Mercer Island without a point for the final six
minutes of the half. Mercer Island cut the lead to five points early in the third quarter,
but Wilson went on an 11-4 run over the final five minutes of the quarter to take a
36-24 lead into the final quarter.

Wilson shot just 31 percent (15-of-47) from the field for the game, but held the
Islanders to 25 percent (14-of-54) shooting. The Rams also made just 15 of 31 free

“There may have been some first day jitters because we’ve never done this before,
but we’ll definitely be a lot better tomorrow, especially since we got the win,” Briggs said. “We got the jitters out.”
