Sailing solo now, Crisp leads Clover Park boys back to deep playoff waters

It is not as if David Crisp doesn’t miss his cousin. He does.

But Crisp has a lot of brothers of Clover Park High School boys’ basketball to keep him company.

In 2011 and last season, the Warriors were led by Crisp and Ahmaad Rorie, who guided the school to the Class 2A state title as ninth graders.

In the offseason, Rorie – Crisp’s cousin – left and transferred to Lincoln where he is the star point guard. And Crisp is still in Lakewood, trying to get Clover Park more chances for state championships.

The Warriors took a big step Monday by routing Sequim for the West Central District crown at the ShoWare Center.

“It is different because, in the past, we were captains and stuff, but we never really had to be during the game too vocal,” Crisp said. “We just scored. We didn’t really have to say anything to each other.”

Crisp has taken on more of a scoring role this season. He scored 26 in the victory Monday.

“It wasn’t too hard of a change. I played middle school and AAU, I always averaged 20 (points),” Crisp said. “And I got to high school with my cousin (Rorie), so I could just play that point guard role pretty easy. But this year, I just looked to score more, and find ways to get a win.”

NCAA Division I programs are starting to swoop in. Crisp mentioned Santa Clara because of his affinity toward assistant coach Sam Scholl, who is a Gig Harbor High graduate.

“A lot of other schools are talking to me,” Crisp said. “I am just going to wait.”
