When backs are against the wall, it is a benefit to have a soccer-star-turned-point-guard leading the way.
Brie Hooks, headed to Colorado on a soccer scholarship, isn’t too shabby in basketball. She scored seven of her 21 points in the fourth quarter, including baskets on back-to-back drives in the lane in helping the Bears clinch the SPSL’s final seed to the Class 4A West Central District championships with a 52-49 victory over Bethel at Puyallup High School on Saturday morning.
Hooks did miss all four of her free throws attempts in the final 1:07 to give Bethel a chance to regain the lead, but the Braves committed three turnovers – and Kaytreeona Mack’s game-tying 3-point attempt from the right corner with two seconds to go hit the backboard.
Twenty seconds earlier, Savanna Haverfield sank two free throws to give Tahoma a 52-49 lead. Kymber Morrison made three second-half 3-pointers for the Bears.
Tahoma will travel to Narrows League champion Yelm on Tuesday for opening round of the district tournament.
