Mount Rainier girls 61, Inglemoor 56 in 4A quarterfinals

By T.J. Cotterill

Brittany McPhee scored 28 points and added 14 rebounds as the Mount Rainier High girls’ basketball team rallied from a five-point fourth-quarter deficit to survive Inglemoor, 61-56, in the quarterfinals of the 4A state tournament Thursday night.

Trailing 56-51, Mount Rainier’s Jordan McPhee, twin sister of Brittany McPhee, grabbed an offensive rebound to cut the lead to three with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Her sister took over from there. Brittany scored six straight points to give the Rams their first lead of the fourth quarter. Her fallaway jumper in the middle of the key put No. 2

Lakeside of Seattle boys 69, University 48 in 3A quarterfinals

By Todd Milles

Even when most people scattered out into night, the meaning from the nightcap was clear: Don’t sleep on the Lakeside of Seattle Lions in the Class 3A boys basketball tournament.

From pretty much start to finish, the No. 4 Lions controlled the action – and pulled away in the second quarter for a 69-48 victory over University in the 3A quarterfinals in the Tacoma Dome on Thursday night.

Lakeside is in the state semifinals for the first time since 1989 – the year the Lions went all the way to the championship game, losing to Chief Sealth

Mead girls 53, Skyline 33 in 4A quarterfinals

By T.J. Cotterill

If defense wins championships, then there is a lot to say about the top-ranked Mead High School girls, who put the clamps on Skyline in a 53-33 victory against Skyline in the 4A quarterfinals Thursday.

Mead’s defense held the Spartans to 14.7 percent shooting (5 of 34) in the first half. The Panthers led 22-3 after the first quarter. And Skyline’s Colorado-bound Haley Smith? She was held to six points (2-of-15 shooting)

“We contested shots and that was our goal: No uncontested shots,” said Mead coach Quantae Anderson. “We did a really good job of contesting almost

Lincoln boys 68, Mountlake Terrace 47 in 3A quarterfinals

By Todd Milles

This time, it wasn’t so close.

From the second quarter on, third-ranked Lincoln put on a clinic on how to execute at both ends, and the Abes botted up No. 5 Mountlake Terrace, 68-47, in the 3A boys’ basketball quarterfinals Thursday in the Tacoma Dome.

The Abes and Hawks battled to a one-point game in early December – won by Lincoln, 60-59.

This time around, Mountlake Terrace just could not buy a basket, missing its first eight shots. The Hawks never led.

And Lincoln’s Tre’Shaun Fletcher dominated the game, scoring nine points in the first quarter as

Rainier Beach boys 60, Seattle Prep 52 in 3A quarterfinals

One down, two to go for the defending Class 3A champions.

Top-ranked Rainier Beach overcame a nine-point second quarter deficit to upend Metro League rival Seattle Prep, 60-52, in the 3A quarterfinals Thursday in the Tacoma Dome.

The Vikings overcame the deficit by going on a 22-3 scoring run that lasted deep into the third quarter.

Junior forward Elijah Foster led the way, scoring ten points during the third quarter on the way to a 17-point, 10-rebound performance.

“I challenged him, I told him if you get a double-double every game at state, we can win it” said Rainier Beach

Lake Stevens girls 52, Kentwood 36 in 4A quarterfinals

By T.J. Cotterill

Lake Stevens High wanted no business dealing with Kentwood in a closely contested game.

The remedy? Put the Vikings away with a heavy dose of Brooke Pahukoa.

Pahukoa, a News Tribune first-team all-state senior guard, scored 22 of her game-high 34 points (13 for 24 field goals) in the first half as the Vikings cruised to a 52-36 victory in the quarterfinals of the Hardwood Classic on Thursday.

Pahukoa’s scoring outburst was the most she scored since dropping 42 in the second game of the season in a 46-point win against Marysville-Pilchuck.

She started off hot

Arlington girls 43, Gonzaga Prep 40 in 4A quarterfinals

By Kevin Manning

A late 3-pointer and clutch free throws helped Arlington hold on to upset Gonzaga Prep, 43-40, in a Class 4A girls’ basketball quarterfinal game at the Tacoma Dome.

The Eagles were cold, trying to deal with a Bullpup rally and offense firing on all cylinders – but then Idaho State-bound Lindsay Brown ended the 17-5 run with one single shot.

Brown (13 points, 4-for-12 field goals) took a late step-back 3-pointer that fired up the Eagles’ bench and gave them a 41-37 lead with 1:45 remaining.

“We’re a senior-laden team. We didn’t panic when they made their
