Lakes High’s Marquin Russell likens Missoula, Mont. to his former hometown – Florence, Ala.

To go play football at the next level, he essentially has chosen to go home.

Russell, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior, gave Montana an oral commitment over Idaho on Wednesday night.

Recruited as an athlete, but projected to head to the Big Sky Conference program as a cornerback this summer, Russell said Montana had shown great interest in hims since the Northwest Elite football camp last June – and the relationship grew from there.

“We had been talking off and on, and kind of in the middle and near the end of my season,,” Russell said.

Russell made his official visit to the Grizzlies last weekend.

“I really enjoy the town. I like the people and atmosphere,” Russell said. ” The thing that got me, everywhere I went, in every building I saw a football picture. It seems like the people knew we were football players, and they welcomed us.

“It reminded me of my home in Alabama. … We had a little college, but it wasn’t as big this college town.”

Lakes coach Dave Miller said he could see Russell playing in the secondary, of it that doesn’t work out, move to slot receiver.
