Swilley resigns from Yelm football after five seasons

Randy Swilley, who coached Yelm within one game of making the Class 4A football playoffs, resigned from the position after five seasons.

Before that, he spent five seasons as an assistant under Rocky Patchin at North Thurston – and six seasons as the head coach at Hoquiam.

Yelm lost 29-22 to Olympia in the final week of the regular season to miss out on the postseason.

The football position is currently open, and school officials ask that candidates apply online (www.ycs.wednet.edu). Also, teaching positions will be open as well, said Yelm athletic director Thad Nelson.

In matchup of reigning state champions, Steen pins Somera at all-SPSL meet

Ian Steen wasn’t expecting an easy win.

After all, the Graham-Kapowsin senior knew exactly how skilled his competition was in the championship match of the All-SPSL Wrestling Tournament. Not only was Enumclaw senior Lucas Somera a fellow state champion, but the two have wrestled each other a half-dozen times over the years.

But instead of worrying, he did just the opposite.

“I came into the match really calm,” Steen said. “I’ve never been that calm before a match before. I just waited for any openings because I know he likes to open up sometimes.”

It worked.

In a matchup of

Boys swimming primer: Stadium in good position to defend 4A title

Team to watch
Coming off its first Class 4A team title since 1954, Stadium is locked and loaded for a repeat run. First, it will have to get by Gig Harbor and Olympia in the Narrows League – but the Tigers’ returning depth (Logan Rysenus, Andrew Lackman) and the addition of Bellarmine Prep student Matthew Um put them on the short list of state favorites.

Dual-meet league favorites
SPSL North – Mount Rainier. SPSL South – Curtis. Narrows 4A – Stadium. SPSL 3A - Peninsula. Narrows 3A – North Thurston. SPSL 2A – Steilacoom. Evergreen Conference – Aberdeen.

McPhee slowed down, not stopped in leading Mount Rainier past White River

Even if Mount Rainier’s Brittany McPhee is contained, she really isn’t.

The White River girls’ basketball team prevented McPhee from scoring at least 30 points for the fourth consecutive game. But she still had 22 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, powering the Rams to a 52-37 victory Saturday at the ShoWare Center.

McPhee, last year’s Washington girls basketball Gatorade player of the year, faced different looks from the White River defense throughout the game, including 2-3 zone, man-to-man and box-and-one.

“No matter what you do, you can’t really guard her,” White River coach Chris Gibson said. “We
