With less than six minutes remaining, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague felt the pressure.
And the Broncos did not back down.
Converting a key fourth down, the underdogs converted the game-winning touchdown on Connor O’Neill’s 4-yard run with just over two minutes to go, and No. 2 Lind-Ritzville/Sprague upended top-ranked Morton-White Pass, 21-19, for the Class 2B championship in the Tacoma Dome on Friday night.
The Broncos converted a fourth-and-18 when quarterback Dylan Hartz connected with O’Neill on a 24-yard pass – down to the Timberwolves’ 5.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague coach Greg Whitmore said he knew his team would deliver.
“They’re gutsy players, they never give up,” said Whitmore, who noted that he trusted Hartz to make the crucial plays. “The bigger the venue, the bigger the moment, you know he’s going to make a big play.”
Morton-White Pass got the ball back, but Rylon Kolb’s pass was picked off by Hartz, who grabbed it with just one hand.
The Timberwolves held, and blocked the punt, taking over at the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 32-yard line for one final play. But Kolb was hit as he tried to get off a pass, and it fell incomplete.
It was the second time in as many years that Morton-White Pass fell short in the title game.
