It was almost like a scene out of “Stand By Me” – four brothers together again, celebrating a singular moment.
In this case, it was the special sign-and-seal day for Bellarmine Prep basketball standout Lucas Meikle, who inked his name to the binding contract on full scholarship to play at Gonzaga University starting next fall.
Meikle is one of two recruits the Zags are bringing in for the class of 2013. Ryan Edwards, a 6-foot-11 post out of Montana, joins the 6-8 Meikle in this frontcourt-heavy class.
As Meikle sat in a conference room at school early Wednesday morning, waiting for his late-arriving teammates, the conversation shifted to the early days – the Tacoma Knights youth team – when the four teenagers (Meikle, Sefo Liufau, Isaiah Flynn and Jacob Salazar) met for the first time, and played together.
“It has been fast. It has been fast, that’s all I can say,” Meikle said. “I remember fourth grade. It is crazy to see fourth grade to now. It has been quite the journey.”
No sooner did the teammates show up, giving Meikle a pat on the back and posing for team photos as he finished up signing his letter of intent.
“It is awesome. I don’t really know anything else besides my AAU team,” Meikle said. “Those … guys are like my brothers since fourth grade. We’ve grown up together pretty much, learned how each other does everything.
“It will be a change from high school to college. I am excited for it. I am not really nervous. I am looking forward to getting there, working hard.”
With his wide-ranging skill set – Meikle is an inside-outside threat – the Lions’ senior is expected to come in as a wing.
“They play my style of basketball, I feel like,” said Meikle, who said he has met former Bellarmine Prep and Gonzaga basketball star Casey Calvary once – two years ago. “The school and everything about it, it felt right – from basketball to school to the people. It is the best school on the West Coast.”
