Make no mistake, the Liberty High Patriots – the three-time reigning KingCo 3A girls soccer champions and defending Class 3A runners-up – put on a clinic in eliminating Bonney Lake, 3-1, at Sunset Chev Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Kiana Hafferty scored twice in the 21st and 62nd minutes, and Liberty (15-3) outshot Bonney Lake, 20-6.
“If we play the best we can, this is what happens usually,” Hafferty said.
The Patriots advance to the semifinals Friday to face Meadowdale or Columbia River at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup
Shot after shot whizzed in the direction of Bonney Lake goalkeeper Sydney Bennett, who did make seven saves. Each of them was struck with authority.
It helps when your coach – Tami Nguyen, formerly Tami Bennett – once held the high school scoring record in the state of Washington with 152 goals for Seattle Christian.
“All the little things that coaches usually let go, she gives us those details that really make it work,” Hafferty said. “If our shot is a little bit off, she knows what to tell us to make it better.”
The Panthers (13-5) did not get off their first shot until the 32nd minute, but they made it count when Andrew Bowman’s free kick from 25 yards out just landed below the crossbar for a goal to cut it to 2-1.
“I thought we had a better attack in the second half – but no results,” Bonney Lake coach Luke Helling-Christy said. “(The Patriots) were tremendous. They were, by far, the best team we have come across with skill. We didn’t find any weak spots in them.”
