Word on the street: Marysville-Pilchuck has powerhouse running attack.
Word on the street: Timberline has strong defense against the run.
Both teams lived up to their reputation at key junctures Saturday night, but big plays by the Tomahawks of the 3A Western Conference built too big an early lead, and Marysville-Pilchuck got out of Lacey with a 33-21 victory in the Class 3A first round at South Sound Stadium.
Marysville-Pilchuck (9-2) scored three touchdowns on plays of 40 or more yards, and the last one – a 42-yard TD run by Deion Stell – blunted a Timberline second-half comeback, which had cut it to 26-21 in the fourth quarter on Chris MacNeil’s 11-yard touchdown strike to Brennon Kaleiwaheall.
Tomahawks sophomore Austin Joyner carried nine times for 170 yards in the first half, scoring three touchdowns – two on runs of 74 and 73 yards.
