Last year, The News Tribune began a partnership with Scott Odiorne, also known as the “Score Czar,” to publish computer-based high school football rankings.

Here is how he explains the process:

The computer rankings take the outcome of each game and endeavors to capsulize the data created by the final score by placing a numerical rating on how each team did compared to the caliber of their opponent.

The computer takes Points Allowed divided by Points For, multiplied by strength of schedule to determine each team rating.

Week 3 is the earliest computer rankings can be calculated.

Either O’Dea should be ranked third, or their number (1.176) is wrong.

  2. Hey were is the love in the rankings for Graham Kapowsin high school.
They beat up on Curtis and they are ranked 10th. The only loss they have is to the Number 5 team in the state Federal Way. REALLY Come on man.

  3. LanceWhite says:

I realize it’s some sort of computer secret sauce that comes up with these rankings, and is incapable of factoring in emotion or skill, and while Peninsula is good, no way in h*** they are #3 in the state. There’s just no way.

  4. ScoreCzar says:

Solid argument for O’Dea, loss to Issy is haunting them a bit. Strength of Schedule holding them back right now too.

G/K is a quality team, I’ve seen them play but need to stop allowing points. Double digit points allowed in every game. Look at the top teams profiles and you will find a shutout or two on almost every one.

Peninsula benefited from a perfect storm with the numbers. All of their previous opponents over-achieved last week. They played Union very close in week 3, Union beat a then higher rated Battle Ground last week. Auburn Mountainview kept it respectable against Battle Ground in week 4, Peninsula handled AMHS rather easily. Plus nearly all of the higher ranked 3A opponents stumbled to some degree last week.

The computer illustrates the game we all play in our head regarding common opponents and while it is incapable of of factoring in the human elements, it does provide some interesting insight that humans sometimes overlook.

  5. ScoreCzar says:

Sideshow Bill: Misread your comment…yes, that number is a misprint. O’Dea is 1.716. Used to getting yell at, I guess

  6. ttrimble says:

Cascade Christian has to be in the mix somewhere in the 1A. The beat Montesano and lost to Cashmere?
