State game of the week: Liberty Christian ready to roll in 1B ranks

1B No. 1 Liberty Christian (3-0) at 1B No. 3 Touchet (2-0)
3 p.m. Friday at Touchet High School, Walla Walla

Skinny: This is the classic showdown of old dog (Touchet) meeting the new pup (Liberty Christian). Touchet is one of the longstanding powerhouses in eight-man football, winning four state titles (1979, 1994, 1998-99) – long before Liberty Christian even started a football program. After seeing a dip in enrollment two years ago, the Patriots moved down to the 1B ranks, and were not eligible for the playoffs (since they were still classified at 2B). Needless to say, the core group of standouts in receivers Tyler Morris and Brandon Peterson, center Timmy Koglin and quarterback Mike Olson is hungry to go a long ways. As for the Indians, they have 32 players on the roster, which is practically the entire enlistment of boys in the school. Their talent is in the junior class, led by do-everything quarterback Elias Martinez (284 passing yards, 277 rushing yards, six total TDs), who really sets the tempo. Winner takes a big step in contending for 1B Southeast League crown, even though this is the opener for both schools.

TNT pick: Liberty Christian, 45-32.
