Kentwood’s defense had another strong showing, causing four Mount Rainier fumbles and the No. 7 Conquerors beat the Rams, 70-0, at Highline Stadium on Friday night.
The defensive effort was led by Ryan Dozier and Kyle Capperauld. Dozier, a team captain, has led the Conquerors in tackles for the third straight week.
But it was Capperauld, a sophomore nose guard, who stepped up and made plays for the defense.
“Our defense was allowing him to come free off the line – somebody has to come free and tonight it was his night,” Kentwood coach Rex Norris said. “Our defense was able to make plays and caused fumbles. The team is playing hard right now.”
Kentwood quarterback Dan Manio had strong support from his young offensive line, which was missing Zach Johnson (knee).
“(Manio) was behind a more experienced line that is starting to understand what we’re doing,” Norris said. “He’s coaching them out there and they’re responding. It’s good to see them come together in this game.”
The Conquerors next host cross-town rival Kent-Meridian next Friday at French Field.
