From Puyallup Herald sports reporter Shaun Scott:

Rogers High defensive end Gavin Kovacs channeled his inner Derrick Thomas against Beamer on Friday night.

Kovacs, who like the former NFL sack specialist, registered four sacks in the Rams’ 27-6 SPSL South victory at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

“I can’t do anything without the rest of my defense, so it’s all on them,” Kovacs said. “Our team was just in the zone. We were going hard. The other team wasn’t bad, but we just got them on a couple of plays.”

Rogers coach Gene Bowen gave kudos to his big man on the defensive front.

“He’s so quick and so strong for a big guy,” Bowen said. “That is exactly what we expected him to do. We just cut him loose and let him go get after guys.”

Rogers defense held Beamer’s offense to a meager 132 total yards.
