State game of the week: Lakewood not underestimating Meridian

1A Meridian (0-1) at 2A No. 6 Lakewood (1-0)
7 p.m. Friday at Dick Cardinal Stadium, North Lakewood

Skinny: Even though these two schools have not met since Dan Teeter started coaching at Lakewood, he certainly knows Meridian well. The 1991 Lynden Christian graduate played against some of those physical Bob Ames-coached teams. And even after the Trojans were demolished by Burlinton-Edison, 42-8, over the weekend to fall out of the top 10 in Class 1A, Teeter knows the Cougars cannot take them lightly. What really showed up Friday was the Lakewood defense – one that lost eight starters from last year’s squad helped the school end its 17-year state-playoff drought. “We are faster on defense,” Teeter said. That does not bode well for an inexperienced Meridian offensive line that has just one returning senior – and talented running back Letrez Jones, who saw just five carries in the opener.

TNT pick: Lakewood, 28-20.

  1. Would have thought that State 1A #2 Montesano @ 1A #7 Cascade Christian would be a better choice for State Game of the Week.
