After being approved for funding in 2009, officials in the Tacoma Public Schools announced Wednesday that tackle football is returning to city middle schools.

Starting in early March of 2013, varsity, junior varsity and C-team football will be offered at the district’s nine middle schools – Baker, Giaudrone, Gray, Jason Lee, Mason, First Creek, Meeker, Stewart, Truman Middle Schools.

The last time tackle football was held below the high school level was 1987.

“It is not a relief – it is progress,” said Don Clegg, in his 25th season as football coach at Wilson High School. “Anything (Tacoma Public Schools officials) can do to make our programs better is good. It is a very positive step.”

The season will run from March 4 until April 23.
