So long, Tacoma, it’s been fun

Hat-tip to @StatewideStats for reminding me of this Neko Case song about Tacoma. Seems appropriate for this post.

When I began work at The News Tribune in November 2007, my only real experiences with Tacoma had been covering state football and basketball games at the Tacoma Dome.

I hated the dome. Still do, actually – you try spending back-to-back-to-back 14-hour days in that dreary place.

Yet, almost five years later, I’m leaving knowing that there’s much, much more to this city than the dome. Tomorrow is my last day at the TNT. Next week, I’m moving to Phoenix with my wife and daughter. In Arizona, we’ll be close to family and I’ll face an even bigger challenge — potty-training my 2-year-old daughter.

Truth is, my time covering high schools for the TNT was coming to an end, anyway. About two weeks ago I was offered a dream job – the TNT’s beat writer for University of Washington football and men’s basketball teams. Around that time, my wife was offered a job in Phoenix. We spent a couple days debating the pros and cons of each and ultimately decided that being close to family was most important.

Leaving the TNT, and the high school beat, is bittersweet. I’m looking forward to new opportunities – and sunshine – in Arizona, but I’ll miss working here and interacting with the many people I’ve gotten to know on my beat who became more than sources.

All that said, here’s how my departure affects you, reader of the Prep Blog – it won’t.

Todd Milles will return to being the TNT’s prep sports coordinator. A 1989 Foss High graduate and member of the TNT sports staff since 1994, Milles is a go-to source for all things Tacoma sports. You’ll want to follow him on Twitter at @ManyHatsMilles.

And when you see Milles acting stir-crazy on the third leg of a back-to-back-to-back 14-hour-a-day shift of covering state hoops at the Tacoma Dome, go easy on him.

  1. You’ve added a lot to our enjoyment of many sports. Thanks for your coverage and best wishes in AZ. (Apparently Someone wanted you to get a feel for the hot temps before you left.)

    Doug,
You will be missed by Tacomans and many others in the South sound area. Best wishes to you and your family. Tacoma’s loss is going to be Phoenix’s gain.

Welcome to the Phoenix area! I moved down here about a year ago and love it! We’ll have to go out and get some beers whenever Divish comes to town.
