Newcomer sparks Sumner to big win over Auburn Mountainview

Although Brandon Tuilaepa and Lokahi Kamau provided the thunder and lightning to Sumner’s powerhouse run game, it was newcomer DeJon Lynch that ignited the Spartans to a 20-7 upset victory over Auburn Mountainview on Friday night.

Lynch – seldom used in the first half – showed his breakaway speed in the third quarter with a 65-yard game winning touchdown run, putting Sumner ahead 14-7 following a two-point conversion.

Although it was his only score of the half, Lynch remained a mainstay in the Sumner offense from there on out, pounding his way to 108 yards on 11 carries.

Kentwood gets going early, rolls big past Auburn, 31-7

Expectations are high for the Kentwood High football team this season.

A convincing 31-7 win in Auburn’s backyard raised those expectations even higher.

The Conquerors were handed a tough test with their opening game of the season being on the road at Auburn Memorial Stadium. With a solid group of returners, including three-year starting quarterback Dane Manio, Kentwood was projected to find themselves in contention for an SPSL North title by the end of the season.

Those projections might need some tweaking after it took Kentwood only seven minutes to score three touchdowns and put Auburn away.

“It was really

Big second half propels Puyallup past Beamer, 33-19

It was a first game that looked like a first game: lots of penalties, lots of mistakes, lots of lessons to learn.

In the end, the Puyallup Vikings managed to get a victory along with their lessons, taking a season-opening 33-19 home win over the Todd Beamer Titans at Sparks Stadium.

“We knew that we were a young team going in,” Puyallup coach Gary Jeffers said. “We really didn’t know what to expect. I really felt what really got in our way in the first half and a little bit in the second half was ourselves: a lot of stupid

Woodinville rallies to stun No. 4 Lakes, 31-24, in OT

Lakes High coach Dave Miller scheduled a gauntlet of tough non-league opponents this season for a reason.

He wanted his team to be battle-tested and mentally strong when Class 3A league play rolls around.

But the program used to blowing opponents out early in the year took one on the chin in its season opener Friday night against Class 4A power Woodinville at Harry Lang Stadium, falling to the Falcons, 31-24, in overtime.

“We’ll get more out of this game than any game we won by 50 points,” Miller said.

Despite turning the ball over seven times and being held

Lake Oswego shuts out Olympia for first time since 2007

Lake Oswego, the defending Oregon 6A state champion, forced three turnovers, rolled up 415 yards of offense and blanked Olympia, 34-0, in an opening week nonleague contest at Ingersoll Stadium on Friday.

“That’s a great program we played tonight,” said Olympia coach Bill Beattie, whose undermanned squad was forced to tangle with one of the Northwest’s powerhouse programs without the services of a handful of starters due to injuries and ineligible players. “We wanted to get the best possible opponent to gauge where we want to be as a program and I’m not sure we could have found a better

Late Smolko FG lifts Bethel in SPSL South barn-burner over Spanaway Lake

Who said high-action rivalry football games have to wait until November to play out?

The regular season in Spanaway kicked off with a doozy of a season opener Friday night – and it all came down to the final play.

Ryan Smolko, the single-season South Puget Sound League record-holder in scoring, kicked a 24-yard field goal with one second remaining, lifting Bethel to a 38-35 victory over Spanaway Lake at Art Crate Field.

The two teams combined for 552 rushing yards – with the Sentinels netting 313. But it was Bethel that went 55 yards in the final 2 minutes,
