How to fill the slow days of June? Why not roll out some way-too-early high football rankings?
We’ll start with Class 4A today. Over the next few days, I’ll post my pre-preseason rankings for 3A, 2A and 1A, too.
I did this last year and the results were favorable. I correctly pegged the eventual state champions in 4A (Skyline), 3A (Bellevue) and 2A (Lynden). I had the right teams (Cascade Christian and Connell) at Nos. 1-2 in 1A, just in the wrong order.
So, there is some legitimacy to these rankings. But don’t get too fired up about them because they’re sure to change when the official preseason rankings are released in August.
Here’s the top five in Class 4A:
1. Skyline (11-3 in 2011)
Spartans lost three games last season and still won their fourth state title in five years. Oh, USC-bound QB Max Browne is back, too.
2. Bellarmine Prep (11-1)
Lots to like about the Lions with Colorado-bound QB Sefo Liufau, RB Isaiah Flynn and WR/DB Calvin Chandler returning.
3. Mead (9-2)
Big-time recruit TE/LB Danny Mattingly is one of the Panthers’ four returning first-team all-Greater Spokane League picks.
4. Skyview (11-3)
State runners-up return talented seniors-to-be in WR/DB Reiley Henderson and LB Jabari Marshall, plus a load of playoff experience.
5. Federal Way (10-1)
Eagles are lightning fast and the defense, which allowed only 12.7 ppg in 2011, should maintain its dominant form.
