Gig Harbor High has hired Aaron Chantler as its new head football coach.

Chantler, a 2002 Wilson High graduate, has spent the past six seasons as a Rams assistant coach. Most recently, he was co-offensive coordinator. Chantler was going to be quarterbacks coach at Auburn High in 2012 — Trojans coach Gordon Elliott is his future father-in-law.

Chantler went through two rounds of interviews and received a call this afternoon offering the 28-year-old his first head coaching position.

I spoke briefly with Chantler Friday evening and he was excited for the opportunity.

“This is one of the premier coaching jobs in the state with the tradition, success and community support,” Chantler said. “If you could capture Texas football in Washington, Gig Harbor comes pretty darn close to it with its community support.”

I’ll have more in a story in Saturday’s paper.

Wow!!!! Never called a play in his life and now he is head coach. Wow!!! Be careful what you wished for “every body gets a trophy” gig harbor. Life as you know it is changing!!!!! REALLY!!!!!!! Thank you
Terry Bouck for “going in another direction”. Clearly being a winning program on and off the field isn’t the direction you were striving for. Glad to see you leave the state so we don’t have to run into you in the community anymore. By the way how is Ted!!!!!!! He still has a job? INTEGRITY, CHARACTER, ETHICAL LEADERSHIP: really miss that in our school district.
