The Bellarmine Prep Lions are showing a knack for late-game postseason comebacks.
Trailing 3-1, regular-season champion Bellarmine Prep rallied for two runs in the fifth inning, then scored all the runs it needed an inning late to lock up its first Narrows League 4A fastpitch tournament title with a 6-3 victory over Central Kitsap on Friday at South End Recreation Area Complex in Tacoma.
The Lions (16-3) broke the tie when Alexa Ostrander’s RBI single to right center scored Alexis Mendez, who just slid by the tag of the catcher at home plate. Two batters later, Alex DeStephano laced a two-run double down the left-field line.
Courtney Schwan shook off a slow start to win her 11th game. She gave up 11 hits, and struck out four batters in seven innings.
The Cougars (12-8), the No. 3 seed who beat Stadium and Olympia to reach the title game, took a 3-1 lead in the second inning on Kari Fetters’ RBI single, scoring Maddy White. Caylee Coulter (11-7) took the loss.
On Thursday, Bellarmine Prep scored seven runs in the final inning to shock South Kitsap, 9-8, in the semifinals. The Lions will be a No. 1 seed in next week’s West Central District championships.
